Personal development is all about change, an over arching term that includes many different approaches to self-improvement. <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=’http://www.drjenniferhoward.com’>Personal development<a/> in its largest context could encompass anything that involves personal growth on all levels, meaning physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Exploring personal development takes a willingness to look at ourselves with extreme honesty and examine ways we want to change and improve. Pain is a great motivator for change. Investigating our pain where we are not our best takes bravery. It might be hard at first to face the reality of our weaknesses, but this ability to be self reflective makes our lives easier in the long run. Out of this process we change and develop into being a better friend, better life partner, better employee, better boss, better entrepreneur, etc. We can have more peace and happiness in our lives. This process helps us create an easier life with less suffering for ourselves, others and the planet.
In psychology, personal development can be thought of as a comprehensive exploration using a number of methods, approaches, and theories. It explores the issues surrounding our childhood development and examines personal power and identity. This psychological viewpoint would involve the development of what we call the ego. When we are developing this personal dimension of our being, it could be said that we are refining our egos.
Many of us are drawn to personal development because of some sort of suffering. Experiences like anxiety, depression, grief, divorce, difficult relationships, parenting conflicts, career challenges, health problems and other common human struggles help us decide to pursue a resolution. Exploring these struggles often involves getting to better know our internal thoughts and feelings. As we work with the difficult issues that arise we can work towards integrating and transforming these difficulties into pathways of healing. We can even start to see these problems as our teachers or as opportunities. Instead of avoiding our difficult issues, we can use them as guides to our wholeness and happiness. This empowers and helps bring us to our deepest potential. Learning from the journey and integrating these difficult parts takes us closer to living our lives to the fullest, therefore connecting us to our true selves. We are able to then live a more balanced and harmonious life.
Personal growth and development take work and concentration and yet it is worth every bit of effort. Some ways to help in our journey of personal development are psychotherapy, life coaching, self-help books, group therapy, 12 step programs, meditation, and journaling, along with self-improvement workshops and seminars. Psychotherapy is a great personal development tool. It is one of the fastest, most direct ways of working on personal issues and the ego.
The difficult parts of our personality and the wounded aspects of our ego cause us to be preoccupied with nonproductive sabotaging thoughts and feelings that don’t allow us to relax. Ego could be defined as our conscious mind or our conscious experience of our own identity. When we’ve integrated these painful parts of ourselves or painful parts of our ego enough, we are able to relax, sink down and live from more of our greatness. Sinking down into our greatness allows us to go beyond the ego into a larger context that contains all aspects of who we are, including our ego, body and our spirit. The more refined, healed and integrated we become, the easier it is to find and stabilize that deeper, higher, larger connection. One could call this larger connection a spiritual connection with God, Wholeness, Ultimate Reality, Christ Consciousness, All That Is or the ultimate Truth from your spiritual tradition. It is these uncomfortable personal issues that keep us blocked from opening to the grace and wholeness that is always available to us.
In spiritual circles, we often hear that the goal is to “get rid of the ego.” In my experience, that usually doesn’t work well as a goal. To have the fullness of what is possible we don’t want to bypass or get rid of the ego. People usually find that the unhealed ego just runs the show behind the scenes. A wounded, tense ego is always worried and trying to position itself to be better than everyone else. We believe we have to be better to survive. The wounded ego is also continuously fearful and works to protect the self from the outside world. Conversely, a healthy ego is what keeps us grounded in the world and allows us to be able to function well every day and build a richer life.
When we have a more healed ego, life feels easier and we don’t experience extreme ups and downs. This allows us to grow into who we came to be. This encourages the unveiling of our deeper wisdom, inner mystic and inner guidance. We feel more in harmony with all of life. A relaxed ego can be flexible and is not preoccupied with itself. Therefore, we can be self reflexive rather than self conscious and always concerned with how we are doing. A relaxed or healed ego can move well through life. The person with a relaxed ego is able to find his or her place in the world. From this more healed state and in our own unique way, we can take appropriate actions to help ourselves, others and the planet. Isn’t that worth taking the pathway to healing?

Has it ever crossed your mind what personal development is exactly? How can it be defined & then implemented in your life? Step 3. Smooth out the path:
Once you have successfully performed your personal development research you should have learned about your goal. By studying the lives of those who have already achieved it you will find that in the majority of cases these people encountered many problems – the bigger the goal, the bigger the problems in most cases. I offer this practical personal development guide to success for all those who have tried before yet failed. It doesn’t matter where you are now in your your own personal development or or where you wish to go. It matters very little how far reaching your personal development goal is or how hard it appears to be to attain. No matter what you want to achieve rest assured that some else has achieved something similar beginning somewhere close to where you are. If they did it so can you!
If you follow the 6 personal development steps set out before you, you will be achieving your personal development goals very soon.
Step 1.
The first personal development step is essential! You must be clear about what you want! When you begin to set personal development goals ensure you have a very definite arrival point. Some people when they want to better their lives look around for the path of least resistance. They have no real idea of what they want from life but just know they want to improve it. They therefore look at many different things and try many different personal development approaches without every really devoting themselves to one objective and never achieving success. There is no personal development!
If you live in New York and wish to visit San Diego you do not begin by looking at the most convenient and easiest route before you decide your destination! You just decide you want to go to San Diego!
It is the same with any personal development goal. No matter how hard or unreasonable your desire may seem you must always follow your heart! Have a clear definition of what success means to you. Set you personal development goal now by deciding exactly what it is you want from life!
Step 2.
Narrow the personal development goal down. Get specific. Deciding that you are going to visit San Diego is all well and good but the city is extremely large. Where in San Diego do you want to go? Be specific in your goals. For example, wanting to lose weight is a reasonable and achievable goal but it is too vague. Set a target for your weight loss. Do you want to lose 5 pounds, 10 or even 20 pounds? To achieve any kind of personal development you must be specific!
Step 3.
Write your personal development goal down. Make in concrete by putting it on paper. Place it somewhere where you can see it everyday. It makes the goal real and acts as a reminder of what you are working towards. This is why company’s have their mission statement in giant letters where every employee can see it! Create your mission statement and on it place your goal.
Step 4.
Create a personal development plan. Look for ways that will help you achieve this goal. How did others achieve similar results? Did they learn lessons from experience which you can also learn without having to experience the learning as they did? Use the personal development journeys of others. How did other people do it? Learn from their mistakes and use them for your own learning. Someone else may have failed hundreds of times in their personal development before they learned to do it right. You don’t have to be the same. Just follow the final plan they used to succeed!
Step 5.
Once you have a personal development plan break it down into smaller more easily achievable goals. Each day should not pass without you being a little closer to achieving your goal. No matter how the small the steps are just take them and ensure you are taking them in the right direction!
Step 6.
Create a mental picture of success. Picture yourself enjoying the personal development achievement of having already acquired your goal. Feel all the positive emotions that come with this success. Review this mental picture first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

The first step to personal development is accountability. You must first be held responsible for all your actions or inactions. Personal Development – 10 Tips on How to Get Started
Are you totally happy with your life? It wouldn’t surprise me if your initial response was to ask the question “Is anyone totally happy with their life?” Fair comment. So let me rephrase the question. “Is there any area of your life right now that you are not happy with?” Is that a better question?
You may be one of the fortunate ones who can say they are happy in every area of their life. However, I bet you are like most people in our society, who are probably unhappy with one or more areas of their lives. If that is the case, let me talk to you about personal development.
Before I move on it may be useful to offer a definition of personal development. I decided to do some research on the internet and Google the term personal development. I was surprised to find that there were not really that many sites that offered a definition, although there were many adverts promoting personal development. I shouldn’t be surprised because Marketdata a research firm has estimated that the personal development industry is set to grow at a rate of 11.4 yearly through to 2010, to a value of .9 billion.
“Personal development is the deliberate growth or development of a particular individual to bring out their potential and capabilities making them more aware of their inner feelings, belief systems to become a more conscious, whole or healthy human being”.
I know that probably seems like a mouthful but it seemed to encompass my own thoughts about what personal development is. I decided to ask my partner to offer a definition:
“Strategies that enable me to enhance my life in all areas”
Now I do like this definition because it says what it is, simply and succinctly. The thing about personal development, is that it means different things to different people. When someone embarks on the journey of personal development, it maybe that they have chosen to improve their health, relationships, career prospects, finances etc. Sometime people talk about the mind, body and spirit, or physical, emotional and spiritual.
So how do you get started on the road to personal development? Well, first of all become aware of what you already have in your life and what you are grateful for and then think about what is missing, what do you want, I mean really want. Awareness has to come first, because without an awareness there can be no conscious decision to take action. Becoming aware also means asking yourself different questions and then seeking out the answers. So if your question is “There must be more to life than this?” your mind is already making an assumption that there is more to life and as if by magic you start to see things around you that maybe you did not notice before.
Below I have put together my top 10 strategies that I use regularly to keep myself motivated. As a bonus I contacted some of my friends within the personal development field and asked them to give me their top 3 personal development books and created a top 10 list. I hope this helps you to get started.
1. Take time everyday to do something for yourself. This is so fundamental. Many people go through their day giving of themselves to other people, their job etc. and don’t have time for themselves. Even if you give yourself 15 minutes, that is time with yourself to reflect and focus on the most important person in your life, YOU.
2. Read or listen to personal development material. You must find time to learn about personal development to read or listen to positive and inspirational messages. You could use the 15 minutes put by for yourself to read a chapter of a book. If you drive, put in a tape or CD, this is making use of net (no extra time) time.
3. Decide what you really want to do and do it. Often we think about what we want to do and make excuses as to why we can’t do it. The reality is that the time we have taken to think up excuses as to why we can’t do something, we could have done it. What have you been putting off doing? Take this opportunity to do it, clear out the clutter. Once you have done it there is space in your mind to think about other things.
4. Do not be afraid of making a mistake. You will only achieve success from doing. In history many brilliant ideas have come about because of a mistake. Don’t let fear of failure stop you from doing what you want.
5. Do not put off making a decision because you are afraid it may be the wrong one. Nothing is gained by sitting on the fence. So the sooner you make a decision, even if it is the wrong one, the sooner you can make the right one. Practise being decisive.
6. Keep a journal recording your thoughts, ideas, feelings and personal growth. Keeping a journal is a great way of measuring your progress. Looking back at your journey. It is also a great source of material for any projects you hope to do in the future. If one of your dreams is to write a book, why not start with jotting down ideas in a journal.
7. Be flexible and willing to change your approach if things are not working. Sometimes when you set your mind to do something, with a set plan, things don’t always go smoothly. Remember that as long as you are clear about your destination, you can always change your route, it may take you longer, but as long as you get there in the end.
8. Visualise your goals on a daily basis. Better still put up pictures of your goals so that you can see them on waking up and going to bed. Our minds respond better to pictures than words.
9. Get yourself and elastic band and put it around your wrist. Make sure it fits loosely. Every time you find yourself thinking a negative thought pull the elastic band and let go so that it snaps back onto your wrist. Yes, it will hurt. That is the whole idea. Keep this up for the next 30 days and notice what happens.
10. Celebrate your achievements. Award yourself for any progress that you make because you deserve it.

A – Aware (Being)
Being aware is the process which turns our lives and improves them. It is not a one-time task, it is a life-long exploration. It can start in different ways, from different reasons. Being aware starts with understanding that, while the past made us what we are today, and the future may give us the time to put our skills at the service of our beloved ones, the present is the only tense which really counts, and here the only place where we are. Being aware also means considering the needs and wants of ourselves, the people who are dear to us, the people who do not arise any specific feeling in us, and the ones who we would not rather meet.
M – Meditating
Meditating can be done in a non-sectarian or religious way. Praying is a form of meditation, loving kindness is contemplated in meditation, meditating may also be a way to relax the mind. A – Active (Being)

E – Eating (properly)
Eating properly is self-evident: we are what we eat! Still, even if we heard it many times, we need to remind it to ourselves when we sit at the table. Eating properly is a form of respect towards our body; and also towards the generations which preceded us, and to whom we owe our nativity.
